Nanny McPhee is the story of a Widower, Mr. Brown (Colin Firth), and his unruly brood. The children run off nanny’s faster than greased lightin’ and Mr. Brown finds himself in a pinch. His patented rhythm method has produced more young than a Catholic prostitute and he now must depend on a rich in-law to support them. When Aunt Adelaide (Angela Lansbury) gives him an ultimatum: get wed or no more bread, in steps magical Nanny McPhee (Emma Thompson) to the rescue.
I’ll not pretend that this is a great movie, but for a children’s movie, Nanny McPhee is not bad. My purdy wife Mae Rockafeller and I have a four year old daughter so we often find ourselves watching movies featuring talking animals, cars, plants, furniture, food and anything else someone can draw big cute eyes on. Typically I have the hard time watching because every time I hear some cutesy little talking pony’s voice I think about the forty year old fat, balding guy named Eugene on the other side of the microphone and have to wonder how he discovered that he could speak that way. In the case of Nanny McPhee there is a good storyline and developed characters. I was really impressed that my daughter followed the movie without losing interest despite the fact that it was not animated. This was one fairytale that I can endorse for the whole family.

Mr. Roger is so crass! He is darn tootin’ bout Nanny McPhee though. Mr. Brown and his bunch of little britches make for a thrilling show, and Nanny McPhee’s mysticism is enough to keep even Mom and Dad glued to the tube! And yes, it is a pleasure not to have to watch the bug-eyed ponies for a change. I was a tad bit surprised that the witchy lady didn’t scare the doodie out of our little one. I think she figured how scary could the wart-faced lady be if she can inspire an ass to dress up and dance. Oh yes, there is a dancing ass in this movie. (Shake it!)
